About PPHI Sindh

Imagine living in a remote village with no doctor in sight, no nearby hospital, and limited access to even the most basic healthcare. That’s the harsh reality for millions in rural Pakistan—until PPHI Sindh stepped in.

People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI) Sindh is a non-profit company registered under Section 42 of the Companies Act, working with a simple yet powerful goal: bring quality primary healthcare to underserved communities in Sindh.

The Genesis of PPHI Sindh

The journey of PPHI Sindh started in 2007 when the federal government, under a public-private partnership, handed over the management of Basic Health Units (BHUs) to non-governmental organizations in an effort to improve healthcare access in rural areas.

In 2013, this initiative became provincialized under the Government of Sindh, transforming into a sustainable model managed by PPHI Sindh, which is governed by a Board of Directors including health experts and retired civil servants.

Mission and Vision of PPHI Sindh

Vision Statement

“To ensure accessible, affordable, and high-quality primary healthcare for all.”

Core Objectives

  • Deliver basic health services to the rural population.
  • Reduce maternal and infant mortality.
  • Promote preventive healthcare and family planning.
  • Encourage community participation in healthcare planning.

Targeted Population

PPHI primarily serves rural and underserved populations in all districts of Sindh except Karachi, ensuring that even the most isolated communities receive proper medical attention.

Governance and Structure

PPHI Sindh operates under a well-defined organizational structure with:

  • A Board of Directors overseeing strategic decisions.
  • A Chief Executive Officer (CEO) heading operations.
  • District Managers, Health Facility Managers, and trained field staff.

Funding is sourced through the Government of Sindh, with support from international partners such as UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank.

Healthcare Services Offered

Primary Health Units (PHUs)

PPHI manages over 1,200+ health facilities across Sindh, including Basic Health Units (BHUs), Mother & Child Health Centers (MCHCs), and Rural Health Centers (RHCs). These centers provide:

  • General consultations
  • OPD services
  • Minor surgical procedures

Maternal and Child Health Services

From antenatal checkups to delivery services, PPHI facilities ensure that women get safe, hygienic, and skilled care during pregnancy and childbirth.

Family Planning and Reproductive Health

Immunization Programs

In collaboration with the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), PPHI ensures that children receive timely vaccines to prevent deadly diseases like polio, measles, and tuberculosis.

Nutrition Programs

Malnutrition is a serious issue in Sindh. PPHI tackles it head-on through:

Malnutrition Screening

Regular checkups are conducted for children under five and pregnant women to monitor nutritional status.

Supplementary Feeding Initiatives

Nutrient-dense foods are distributed to undernourished children and mothers to support healthy growth and development.

Emergency Services

PPHI is known for its 24/7 operational facilities in many remote areas, offering emergency services even during the most critical hours.

Ambulance and Mobile Health Units

These units provide on-the-go healthcare, reaching communities that are far from static health centers.

Technology Integration in Healthcare

Digital Health Records

Say goodbye to lost or illegible files—PPHI’s health workers use digital record systems for better patient tracking.

Health Management Information System (HMIS)

With HMIS, decision-makers get real-time data, helping them deploy resources efficiently.

Telemedicine Services

Telehealth platforms allow patients to consult with doctors virtually, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

Achievements and Milestones

  • Over 20 million outpatient visits recorded annually.
  • Maternal mortality rates drastically reduced in covered districts.
  • Hundreds of safe deliveries conducted daily across Sindh.
  • Recognized by WHO, UNICEF, and other global health bodies.

Challenges Faced by PPHI Sindh

Rural Infrastructure Issues

Unpaved roads, lack of transport, and poor electricity supply make healthcare delivery a tough job.

Human Resource Shortages

Recruiting and retaining trained staff in remote areas remains a challenge.

Public Awareness Barriers

Convincing communities to use modern healthcare services takes time and consistent outreach.

Training and Capacity Building

PPHI believes that training is the backbone of sustainable healthcare.

  • Regular CME programs for doctors.
  • Skill enhancement workshops for nurses and midwives.
  • Health education seminars in local communities.

Women Empowerment through Healthcare

Healthcare isn’t just about medicine—it’s about uplifting communities, especially women.

  • PPHI trains female health workers who are respected within their communities.
  • Encourages female participation in all healthcare programs and initiatives.

Future Goals and Roadmap

Looking ahead, PPHI aims to:
